In this treatise, I’ve analyzed the meaning of the Lubeck/Baltic Sea journey described in Thomas Mann’s novella “Tonio Kroger”.
Thomas Mann, sho had spent his school days in the city of Lubeck of northern Germany since his birth in 1875, moved to the city of Munchen with his mother in 1893. Before moving to Munchen, he had described the seaside beach of Travemunde as paradise, whereto he used to visit regularly since his childhood. Probably because of this Mann’s recollection of his early days, his works also have a close relationship with the sea, wherein the encounter with the sea has been generally made through taking a journey.
One of the main themes of Thomas Mann’s earlier novels is about the conflict between life and spirit/art, which is also represented by the conflict between the city and the sea. As shown in his other novella “Death in Venice”, the sea was shaped into an image of love and death in contrast with the world of ordinary citizen’s life.
Tonio Kooger, however, does not fit into this scheme. Because in this novella an artist who considers the spiritual world with great importance makes a journey to the Baltic Sea as a way of reconciling himself with the world of mundane life.
