“Liberation”, the novel written by Kim Dong-ni, exposed the reality awareness and the limitation of narrative from several aspects. He blocked the possibility of third world in the confrontation between the left and right wing and confined so called choice of two regime the United State of America andthe Soviet Union. To form an independent nation, there should be a process involved to exclude foreign power. But it showed that his thought was stuck into that time cold war ideology of the United State and the Soviet Union.
In “Liberation”, the author did not represent the ideological nature of the left and right wing but good and evil of them. Furthermore he put the right wing onto the moral superior and justified them intensionally. He made a fatal mistake in the characterization of Uh Sung-geun and Kim Sang-cheol. Additionally, He described the left wing negatively and gave the legitimacy to the right wing. On the other hand, he maintained a sympathetic attitude about the pro-Japanese. This showed the political awareness of Kim Dong-ni who was a rightist.
Kim Dong-ni’s “Liberation” is much more important than any other novels he had written in that this novel depicted not only his image of the time but also his awareness of the reality, in detail. This work is a product of political awareness of Kim Dong-ni’s during the post-“Liberation” period. Therefore this work can be evaluated to express his political ideology toward the right wing excessively.
