Exercise-induced oxidative stress can be explained by analyzing various oxidative stress markers in blood, and TBARS or MDA assay which has been widely used in the study of oxidative stress is accepted as a general marker of lipid peroxidation. However, TBA assay also has been criticized as an unsuitable method because of several methodological problems and inconsistency between the results. First, TBARS in not the representative substances for MDA because TBA is not specific to MDA, Second, there is no standardized TBARS analysis method until now. So, plasma MDA concentration could be various depending on which method was applied. Third, plasma MDA concentration could be influenced by various physiological conditions such as plasma volume decrease by exercise and metabolic process of MDA in human body. So, it can be overestimated or interpretated broadly, if these points were not considered in analysis process. Thus, it is necessary to use more precise and reliable analysis method such as HPLC than TBA aasay for more accurate MDA analysis in oxidative stress related studies. Above all, there is no single method that is universally used to determine oxidative stress. Therefore, to analyse two or more oxidative stress blood markers together could be helpful for more objective and accurate study.
