The extension of topics in research on the modern and contemporary history of science in Korea has expanded steadily, and, in particular, research on science and technology during the Japanese colonial era and Park Chung Hee’s presidency has been conducted actively. In the process, points of contact with researchers in other fields have increased and boundaries between academic fields have become permeable, which will further stimulate research on the history of science productively. Recent years have seen the publication of numerous volumes of comprehensive studies on topics, which demonstrates that research hitherto has accumulated considerably in both quantity and quality. On the other hand, the modern and contemporary history of science in Korea faces several tasks. First, in order to expand both the breadth and depth of research, it is necessary to overcome a mononational perspective and to adopt a transnational one. In addition, review must be conducted in order to embrace interviews, which are used considerably in research on the contemporary history of science, as a systematic methodology in research on the history of science. In addition, it is necessary actively to consider the introduction of quantitative methodologies such as statistical analysis for processing the countless data created by contemporary scientific activities such as the vast amounts of materials produced in the process of planning and implementing mass-scale state R&D projects.
