In “The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles” Herman Melville recollects and depicts his observations of the landscape and life of the Galapagos Islands, which he visited in 1841. The novella was first published in Putnam’s Monthly Magazine in 1854, after the successive commercial and critical failure of his ambitious works such as Moby-Dick; or, The Whale and Pierre, or, The Ambiguities. When composing “The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles,” I argue in this essay, Melville intends to write a narrative that presents a different evolutionary vision compared to Charles Darwin’s in his The Voyage of the Beagle published in 1839. As opposed to Darwin who attends to the variation and diversity of species as formative of and formed by the survival of the fittest, Melville in “The Encantadas, or Enchanted Isles” focuses on the possibility of the annihilation and extinction of species, especially a particular individual case of variation he already thematizes in Moby-Dick, Pierre, and “Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street.” Furthermore, I also suggest Melville delves into not only the existential meaning of meaningless survival of the fittest but also a new possibility of the existential storytelling of the annihilated and the extinct.
