The purpose of this paper is to analyze the aspects of national culpability represented in novels in liberation period that show the motives of pro-Japanese literature and self-criticism. After liberation from Japanese rule, the writers felt the urgent need to cleanse themselves of the holdover of pro-Japanese literature for establishing new national literature. Although there were certain amount of discussion at theoretical level, but we find the thorough self-criticism mostly in the novels.
According to the way how the culpability is dealt with, we can classify the novels in two types.
The first one are the novels that feature the pro-Japanese writers as main character. (Kim, Dong-in's 〈Banyeokja(A Revel)〉 and Lee, Seok-jing's 〈Hangye(Bounds)〉) In this novels the main character feels the sense of guilt because he believes his acts in the colonial period were for the sake of Korean nation. But the consequences of his acts that have incurred the damage to other persons can be reproached.
The second type is the autobiographic novels where main character claims that he was forced to collaborate with the Japanese collonizer. (Lee, Tae-jun's 〈Haebangjunhu(Liberation, before and after)〉 and Chae, Man-sik's 〈Minjok-ui-joe-in(Sinner of the People)〉) The feeling of shame that he has broken away from the order of national community make him question his self-identity. The main theme of this type of novels has to do with re-establishment of self-identity through forgiveness.
