This paper aims to analyze the construal process of internet memes within a framework of Cognitive Linguistics by conducting a case study of the Windmill Noise Cancer meme. This meme originates from Mr. Trump’s exaggeratedly false statement that the noise from windmills causes cancer, and indicates the meme maker’s negatively evaluative stance toward Mr. Trump’s statement. This paper employs Viewpoint Spaces Theory, which best-fits to elucidate the construal process of meaning construction in internet memes by transparently modeling conceptual structures where multiple viewpoints interact. This paper provides detailed analyses of the Windmill Noise Cancer meme categorized into four subcategories by focusing on the presence/absence of Mr. Trump"s image and who is the represented speaker that conveys the meme"s text. By representing the viewpoint spaces network of the Windmill Noise Cancer meme, this paper backs up Dancygier’s argument that multiple viewpoints are hierarchically ordered at different conceptual levels, rather than randomly juxtaposed.
